Efficiency, according to the Merriam-Webster, goes like this: Noun,
- The quality or degree of being efficient.
- Efficient Operation,
Effective operation as measured by a comparison of production with cost (as in energy, time, and money)
The ratio of the useful energy delivered by a dynamic system to the energy supplied to it
The power to produce a desired result
Is efficiency like the clouds above, just out of your reach? Do you rush to do it all? Rush to get it all done? Does it seem there is never enough hours in a day and that you cant reach your goal?
Do you have a list of to do's? Do you worry that it’s not done correctly or feel that you could have done a better job if you weren’t rushing through the list in order to get it all done as quickly as possible? That has been my goal. To get it all done. To get it done quickly. But maybe, no, more then likely, that is the problem. Maybe I don’t know how to do it efficiently, so it is taking much longer then anticipated and still not coming out the way I wish.
This last week I had the opportunity to spend many hours at Mayo Clinic, they were amazingly efficient. It meant that every minute of every hour spent was used in a very effective way. They did not waste time. They knew their jobs. Everyone trained to do just what they needed to do when they needed to do it. It was refreshing and gave me hope, (some of that is again a story for another day). What I want to apply in my business from what I saw there, is this:
I need to take photos. Lots and lots of photos. Photos of all those Ornaments, Keepsakes, Decor and more. Maybe instead of taking hours and hours’ worth of photos, (many the same subject over and over as I am not a photographer), I should spend a couple of those hours learning photography and becoming more effective. (Saving energy, wasted time and, money.)
I need to put as many of our items on the website as possible in a day. This requires a title, that photo, a creative description (people, there are a hundred thousand of these items, that’s a lot of creativity), options, variants, editing website SEO’s, tags, collections, and on and on. Perhaps, I should spend more time learning how to do these things efficiently, study the craft, learn more from those that know how to do these things well, so I to will be able to produce that desired result I am looking for.
Put aside the list aside and learn. Take a class, watch a video, read up on your subject. Then get out and take a walk, do a puzzle, clear your head, come back, jump in, and get back to it. Each time more efficiently then the last. Each time practicing the skill you have learned to do better and to the best of your ability.
Efficiency, What's that mean? It means that’s really my goal!
