October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. According to ASPCA (American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), approximately 3.3 million dogs enter shelters each year. Many never find their way to a forever home.
If you are thinking of adopting a dog, make sure it's for the right reasons. Make sure to think it through. Having a pet is a huge obligation. When you are looking at those adorable, sad eyes that say take me home, it is hard to remember that similar to children; animals take a lot of work.
Do you travel? Is there someone readily available to dog-sit while you are away? Are your living arrangements compatible with taking care of a pet? Do you have the time or will power to take your dog for a daily walk? The funds to take care of a dog's medical needs? (many times the health history of a shelter dog is unknown). If the answer to any of these questions is no, consider some other alternatives. Volunteer at your local shelter, spend your time promoting accommodations and pet adoption, or donate to your favorite animal shelter or animal cause.
Thanks for listening,
